Suddenly on Saturday, July 28, 2018, Briggs Finly Hensley, 79, of Forest, took his final road trip. He traveled to Heaven to be with his Lord Jesus and his wife Peggy, his wife of 56 years.
Born on December 21, 1938, in Bedford County, Briggs was a son of the late Emmitt and Cathryn Hensley.
In addition to his wife and parents, Briggs was preceded in death by his brother Joe, sister Naomi, brothers-in-law: Keith, Henry, Ronnie, Lester, Preston, Carlton and sisters-in-law Ruth, Louise, and Muriel
Briggs is survived by his children: Diane Eagle (Mike), Brian Hensley (Gail), Brenda Harlow (Joe), and Denise Owen (Jim Farrar); seven grandchildren: James, Dustin, Paige, Brooke, Hailey, Taylor, and Kelly; four great-grandchildren: Nevaeh, Kendall, Savannah and Finly and one on way in August, Alexander; four sisters: Dorothy Hensley, Virginia Stephens (Marshall), Jane Andrew, Marie Rogers (Clark) and Melinda Nutter (Gary); two brothers: Ashby Hensley (Frances) and Gordon Hensley (Sandra); four sisters-in-law: Sadie Harris, Alma Fisher, Janie Stinnett, Wilma McConville, Ann Farris (Royall); three brothers-in-law: Sam ( Melinda), Robert (Nancy), and Allen(Cara Lu), and numerous loving family members.
Briggs proudly served his country as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airbourne and served two years of his service in Okinawa. Throughout his service he had the opportunity to see many other countries in the Far East. Briggs kept in touch with many of his friends he made while serving. Briggs was a member of the American Legion Post 16. Briggs lived a full life. During his life he had many jobs, but his favorite job was driving the bus. He started driving with Lynchburg Bus Service and for the last 30 years he worked for Abbott Bus Lines. During his years of driving he visited 49 states and Canada. Briggs and Peggy enjoyed traveling and making many friends while on the bus. He was always planning his next big road trip
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 3, 2018 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Pleasant View Baptist Church, Lynchburg, VA. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, August 4, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Fort Hill Memorial Park and other times at the family home.
