Deacon Calvin Nowlin

June 19, 1945 — December 26, 2024

Deacon Calvin M. Nowlin went home to be with the Lord on Thursday afternoon December 26, 2024, at the Lynchburg Dialysis Center. Calvin was born on June 19, 1945, to Richard Gilbert Nowlin and Anna Flowers Nowlin in Campbell County, Virginia.

On July 12, 1985, Calvin was joined in Holy Matrimony to his beloved wife, Elizabeth (Liz) Dempsey. Calvin was preceded in death by his parents, his son Delwin Nowlin and Sister Vonda Nowlin. Calvin was the skilled business owner of L&N Masonry Company; operated carpentry and masonry specialist for over 61 years in Lynchburg, Amherst, Charlottesville, Rustburg, Roanoke and many different locations and surrounding areas. Due to failing health he retired from his life’s passion of Masonry. Calvin was a 1964 graduate of Campbell County High School. He joined Silver Grove Baptist Church over 40 years ago. During his spiritual journey he became a Deacon and was with the Gospel Sensations when the group was first formed adding to their smooth and powerful harmonies which led to the Silver Grove Men’s Chorus. His voice was well recognized and enjoyed by all. He loved watching his great grandson Zion play basketball and he loved to travel. Calvin had a big heart and gave generous donations to the less fortunate and many organizations.

Calvin leaves to mourn and cherish his memory: His Loving and Caring wife Elizabeth “Liz” Nowlin; Three sons, James Austin, Rodney “Rod” Austin, and Fredrick “Freddy” Austin; Two sisters Mildred Hamer and Diann Lovelace, an aunt Elsie Lovelace; three daughters Carella Anderson, Regina Tyler, and Lerissa “Reese” Wilson; grandchildren, Gabrielle Burks, Sabrina Burks, Tianna Tyler who assisted with his care; other grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends. In addition, best friends William Alexander, Robert Elliott, Theodore Crider, Curtis Haskins and James Reid.
