Carl David Woodie
December 14th, 1954 – December 27th, 2018
Age 64
Our beloved husband, father, poppy, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend, peacefully entered into the House of the Lord on December 27th, 2018; preceded in death by his loving mother, Magaline May Roten Woodie “Peggy”; his parents-in-love Ren and Willis Bare; brother-in-love Dwight Bare; his maternal grandparents Bunk and Johnsie Roten; and his paternal grandparents Oscar and Minnie Woodie. Left to mourn his passing are Terressa Bare Woodie, his beloved wife of 43 years; his devoted son, Jeremy Dwight Woodie and his wife Sheena; his special niece who he loved like a daughter, Anna Marie White and her son, Colton Marshall White who adored his “Poppy”; his brothers and sisters Rocky Bare (Doris), Mona Lisa Bare (Joyce Patterson), Ray Bare (Tonja), Shannon Bare, Angela Blankenship (Michael), Garren Bare, Sabrina Bondurant (Scott), and Allen Woodie (Sheryl); father Carl Woodie; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends, including some very dear “old” friends.
Born and raised in Vinton, David and Terressa’s love story began as youth in church. After graduating William Byrd High School and proudly serving in the United States Army, their love story culminated in their marriage in 1975. In the following years, he served faithfully as bus driver and maintenance at Vinton Day Nursery and Kindergarten while managing and building properties in Vinton, Roanoke County and City. He was a Charter member of Vinton Breakfast Lion’s Club; on the board of Arnold R. Burton; dedicated and faithful to his church family at First Church of God, Vinton. Always an avid music lover, David played in two semi-professional bands: The Equalizers (swing and oldies) and Hired Guns (southern rock). His appreciation of music carried over to his more recent years and attendance at Parkway Wesleyan Church on the Mountain, where he especially enjoyed the Praise and Worship Team. David lent his ladders and electrical expertise at Christmastime when his health and energy permitted him to do so. Although health issues denied him consistent attendance, he loved the Lord and never missed an opportunity to share with others his gentle and loving testimony. Throughout his health journey with heart and lung disease and eventually cancer, he never missed a sunrise, proclaiming God’s mercy in giving him another day.
The family wishes to thank: Physicians to Children for their gift of time; Salem VA Medical Center (especially David Cuff and Lawson Koeppel); Good Samaritan Hospice (Jean, Lorri, Lynnette, Tracy, Cindy, and Cathy); and Cundiff’s Drugstore.
A memorial celebration of David’s life will be held Saturday, January 5th, 2019 at 11am at Parkway Wesleyan Church on the Mountain (460) in Roanoke, VA. The family is being assisted by Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., with the service conducted by Pastor Mike Lauridsen.
