Carl Hushel Purdy

Carl Hushel Purdy, 78, of Lynchburg went home to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Wednesday February 26, 2014.

Carl was born July 29, 1935 in Lynchburg, a son of the late Carl Hushel Purdy, Sr. and the late Nora Harris Purdy Mitchell. Carl was retired from Babcock & Wilcox and was a member of Inglewood Baptist Church.

Carl enjoyed life, and met many life time friends while working, line dancing and travelling. His infectious smile and sparkling blue eyes reflected his warm heart and love for people. Carl was fun to be around. He was an animated story teller, and entertained us with stories from his life. He was talented with his hands, and his strong work ethic lives on in Chris and Tina. Carl delighted children as a professional Santa during Christmas. He glowed when seeing their smiles and the wonder in their faces as they told him their dreams and verified that his beard was real! Music resonated through Carl, he enjoyed singing hymns and country songs. Carl was passionate about his vegetable garden, fishing and railroad memorabilia. He loved a roaring fire in the winter time. Carl's gratefulness, love, strength and courage, especially during this past month, is an enduring part of his legacy.

He is survived by son Chris Purdy and wife Noel of Charlottesville, daughter Tina Purdy Markham and husband Richard of Lynchburg, four grandchildren; Jeremiah Tolley and wife Marrianne, Brittany Purdy Brown and husband Zac, Benjamin Riley and Walker Riley, three great-grandchildren; Mya Tolley, Boone Tolley and Aiden Brown. Also his first wife, Betty Mountcastle. We would like to express a special thank you to everyone at Runk & Pratt, where Carl lived the last few years, for their excellent care and support. Carl loved his many caregivers at Runk & Pratt, and they loved him.

A Celebration of Carl's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday March 9, 2014 in the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
