Carl Torbjörn Resele-Tiden, 93, died on Friday August 8, 2014 at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg, Virginia. He was born in Skyttorp, Sweden to the late Carl Abraham Resele-Tiden, and Agda Augusta Gustafsson on December 28, 1920.
Carl loved to travel. He left Sweden at the age of 27 and came to the United States – where he lived in and explored numerous states before settling in New York and raising a family. Carl was a self-schooled academic, an inventor, a photographer, a mountain-climber, a cross-country skier, a finder of coins behind small ears, a fixer of broken things, and a lover of mid-afternoon (sweet) snacks.
Carl spent a 30 year career working at The Rockefeller University in New York City designing and building instruments for biomedical research. These instruments were not commercially available at the time, but met the experimental needs of the scientists. He built a scale that was sensitive enough to register the weight of a dragonfly, and worked on a prototype of the first artificial hip joint used in primates. After his many contributions to science, he would later be recruited by his wife, to build a little blue-painted dollhouse for his five-year-old granddaughter. He was a quiet, ever-constant presence in a plaid button down, an unassuming man and always, always a gentleman.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of fifty years Magda R. Tiden (née Eriksson), step-mother Bertha and sister Gudrun.
He is survived by his daughter Christine Cardoza and husband Anthony of Lynchburg, son Thomas Resele-Tiden and wife Janet of New York, four grandchildren, Sara Cardoza, Aaron Cardoza, Mason Resele-Tiden, and Claire Resele-Tiden. His extended family in Sweden includes brothers Sven, Åke , and Gösta.
A memorial service was held at Valley View Retirement Community on August 11, 2014, where Carl spent 7 years building a second family among the wonderful community of loving residents and staff. Contributions in memory of Carl may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
