Carol Ann Roberts Appler

Carol Ann Roberts Appler, 84, of Chilhowie, Virginia passed away on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA.   

She was born on April 4, 1939, in Syracuse, NY, the daughter of the late Idwal Roberts and Marie Palmatier Roberts. She attended school at Utica Free Academy, and married Edward T. Appler in 1958 in Utica, NY.

Carol was a longtime member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, the Mannerchor and Moose Club of Utica. She was active in the mental health community, volunteering her time with Compeer of the Mohawk Valley.  She was a skilled artist and loved collecting “knick-knacks” and Goebel hummels. For years she worked at McHarris Gifts and Harris Brothers Jewelers in New Hartford before finally retiring from retail to the serenity of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Salem, VA.

She is survived by her sons, Edward R. Appler of Navarre, FL and James Appler of Waxhaw NC; sister Alice Burger of Rome NY and brother Kenneth Roberts of Pensacola, FL; and grandchildren Kimberly DeFreese, Catherine Appler, Avery Appler and Cason Appler.   She also leaves two great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no services conducted per Carol’s request; however donations may be made to the Crohns and Colitis Foundation or the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
