Carole H. Bowen was born in Lynchburg to Clara Varner Henderson and Clayton McRae Henderson on February 20, 1944, passing on February 25, 2025. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years David; a son, David Clayton of South Boston VA; a grandson, Miles Bowen; and a granddaughter, Sydney Bowen both of Lynchburg. Carole is also survived by a dear loving sister-in-law, Susan Bowen Sineath (Chuck) of Boca Grande, FL, and two brother's-in-law, William Bowen (Kitty) of Goode, Paul Bowen (Nobuko) of Okinawa, Japan and numerous cousins.
Carole graduated from Towson State in Baltimore with BA degree in English. Afterward she graduated from Johns Hopkins with a master's degree in Liberal Arts. In her career she enjoyed working in various legal offices in Lynchburg. She retired from Lynchburg City Attorney's office.
In her spare time, Carole and her husband traveled with Lynchburg Sister City organization to many countries in Europe. She and her husband were host family for eight Japanese exchange students. This led to several personal trips to Japan for weddings.
Carole spoke often about good times growing up with her cousin Larry in Lynchburg and solo train trips to visit another cousin, Kitty, in North Carolina.
One of her all-time loves was Elvis. She had a collection of Elvis memorabilia proudly displayed. She never was able to attend an Elvis concert having to settle for impersonator performances.
Carole enjoyed living at Smith Mountain Lake where she had many church friends especially the "Lunch Bunch" who would gather after Trinity Ecumenical Parish Sunday services.
She loved music, all kinds of music, especially concerts at the Academy, The Jefferson Choral Society, Lynchburg Symphony and always enjoyed attending Little Town Players performances. Carole also enjoyed trips to the Outer Banks to stay with her mother-in-law and the view of the lake from her favorite sun room seat. In later years crossword puzzles, coloring books, watching the Hallmark Channel and old TV shows occupied her life.
Afflicted with Dementia and later Alzheimer's for more than 13 years Carole, who was always a classy lady, enjoyed having her nails done and her hair fixed. She loved dressing up. Carole enjoyed receiving the weekly love cards from her sister-in-law, "Sister Sue", which brought her joy and happiness.
The family wishes to thank Heritage Green and especially Gentle Shephard Hospice for their caring and compassion.
