Caroline D. Saunders

Caroline Doyle Saunders, 94, known to her grandchildren as \"My Mudder,\" died Thursday, January 17, 2013. Caroline was born December 31, 1918, in McKenney, VA, the daughter of Charles Watson Doyle and Eva Thomas Doyle. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. John R. Saunders.

A graduate of Westhampton College (University of Richmond) and The Pan American School, Caroline worked as a medical secretary at the Medical College of Virginia. She very much enjoyed her years in Richmond, and it was there that she met and married John R. They moved to Lynchburg in 1946 where Caroline was active in the Oakwood Garden Club, the Junior League, Boonsboro Country Club and at First Presbyterian Church. Her interests were varied: from gardening, flower arranging and art to sports, especially golf. Her travels to Virginia Beach, Naples, Florida and to Europe were also special times for her.

Caroline is survived by daughters, Betsy Saunders Jones ( Hugh ) of Lynchburg, VA and Sue Saunders Clark ( Bill ) of Devon, PA; grandchildren Brandom Jones Price ( Mitch ) of Whitefish, MT, Caroline Jones Pheeney ( Douglas ) of Darien, CT, Lt. Col. Douglas Clark ( Kathleen ) of Kennett Square, PA and Cameron Clark ( Jacqui ) of Carlsbad, CA; and 8 great grandchildren.

A special thank you to the nursing staff on 5th floor DHC at Westminster Canterbury, Centra Hospice, and to her devoted companions, Dora Painter and Alma Smith, for their devotion to and care of \"My Mudder.\"

The family will receive friends from 5-7pm, Sunday, January 20, at the home of Betsy and Hugh Jones.

After a private graveside service there will be a memorial service on Monday, January 21, 2013 at 12:00 noon, at First Presbyterian Church, 1215 VES Road, followed by a reception in the church Narthex.
