Carolyn M. Hughes passed away peacefully on August 10, 2023 at the age of 85 in Forest, VA. She was born on November 22, 1937, in Cleveland, TN, to the late James W. McAmis and Carrie L. McAmis.

Carolyn was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was married to her beloved husband, Darel C. Hughes (DC), for 64 wonderful years. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with love and cherished memories.

Carolyn leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that will be cherished by her family and friends. She is survived by her devoted husband, DC Hughes; her loving children, Greg Hughes (Pamela), David Hughes (Jimmie), Lori Snead (David), and Linda Hackenbracht (Jason); her adoring grandchildren, Chelsea Austin (Jeremy), Logan Hughes (Emily), Caitlin Parker (Andrew), Nathan Hughes (Chelsea), Lindsay Smith (Zack), Reagan, Delaney, and Darel Snead; Derek, Tessa, Jenna, and Corey Hackenbracht; and her treasured great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Cooper, and Benjamin Austin; Elliot Parker; Jackson and Christopher Hughes; and Bryson Hughes. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Michael S. McAmis.

Carolyn’s love for her family knew no bounds. She was actively involved in their lives, attending sporting events, band performances, school plays, and musicals. Carolyn served as the PTA president, scout troop leader, and was always there to support her children and grandchildren in all their endeavors. Her love languages were sewing beautiful garments and cooking meals for her large family and numerous friends.

Professionally, Carolyn was a registered nurse, trained at the Crawford W. Long School of Nursing in Atlanta, GA. She had a passion for helping others and dedicated her career to serving in various medical fields, including OB/GYN, Pediatrics, and Home Health. She also shared her knowledge and served as a nursing instructor for the home health industry. Carolyn’s expertise and compassion made a significant impact on the lives of her patients and students.

Carolyn was a devoted follower of Christ and member of Beulah Baptist Church, where she worshipped for 61 years. She had a deep connection with her church community and taught first and second-grade Sunday School for over three decades.

A memorial service to celebrate Carolyn’s life will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at 2:30 p.m. at Beulah Baptist Church, located at 528 Leesville Road, Lynchburg, VA. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. at the church. Dr. Dennis Hollandsworth will officiate the service. Following the service, Carolyn will be laid to rest at Virginia Memorial Park, located at 11490 Forest Road in Forest.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Beulah Baptist Church Building Fund in memory of Carolyn Hughes.

Carolyn’s warm presence, loving spirit, and unwavering devotion to her family will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

The family would like to offer their profound gratitude to the compassionate staff of Noah’s Landing and Gentle Shepherd Hospice for the tender attentive care given to Carolyn in her last days.
