Carolyn Hammond Phillips, 91, of Lynchburg, passed away, February 15, 2018 at Runk and Pratt Memory Care, Leesville Rd. She was born in Clearfield, Pa., on May 21, 1926. She met her future husband while attending school in Lynchburg in 1945.
She is survived by her husband of 72 years, William T. Phillips “Bill”, a son, Stephen T. Phillips (Dorothy) and a daughter, Janet P. Dunford ( Mike). Carolyn is also survived by her grandchildren, William Mark Dunford (Stephanie) and Jennifer Dunford Khazai (Ali) and her great-grandchildren: Riley Dunford, Kameron Khazai and Aidan Khazai.
Carolyn was a loving and devoted wife to her husband and children. She educated herself at Radford college to become a teacher and taught at Paul Munro Elementary School for several years. Carolyn retired from teaching when her children went to college and when Bill retired, accompanied him on his painting excursions. They visited many locations around the U.S. and Mexico.
Carolyn was a devoted P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) member and enjoyed playing bridge and golfing with Bill. She loved people and was loved in return. She will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m., Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Tharp Funeral Home Chapel, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg. A visitation prior to the service will begin at 3 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the First Presbyterian Church at 1215 VES Rd., Lynchburg, VA 24503 or the Salvation Army, 2215 Park Ave., Lynchburg, VA 24501.
