Carrie Mae Martin Martin, 94, died Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Carrie was born, September 16, 1917 on a farm in the Pleasant View Community, Amherst County and was a daughter of the late Ernest and Nancy Jane Staton Martin. After attending Amherst County Schools, she married Manson Peyton Martin and they purchased a farm in Bedford County, raising cattle and tobacco. Mr. Martin later established Martin Roofing in Lynchburg.
Surviving Carrie are three sons, Carl Steven, Phillip Michael and his wife Jeanette and Ernest Meyers, her sister Ruby Staton and husband Lonnie of Buena Vista, a brother Ernest Martin of Amherst County, Katherine K. Martin, wife of John Curtis and many special nieces and nephews. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, and four step great-great grandchildren.
Carrie was predeceased by three sons, John Curtis, Peyton Roger, and Calvin Wayne and his wife Ann, a step granddaughter, two sisters Myra Mays, Dorothy Smith, a brother, Raymond and their spouses. She was also predeceased by her former husband, Manson Peyton Martin and the father of their six sons.
Carrie remained active until recent years. She enjoyed yard work and her flowers, cooking for her family and friends and had many good neighbors on Peninsular Street. After retiring from Liberty Nursing Home and Medical Care Center, she enjoyed home sitting with many patients. Perkins Park Christian Church was Carrie\"™s home church for many years.
A funeral service will be conducted Friday, December 2, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Dwayne Martin officiating. Interment will follow at Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday, December 1, 2011 from 6:30 \"" 8:30 pm at the funeral home. Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family, 434-237-9424.
