The beautiful soul of Catherine Virginia Murrell, 66, left this world Thursday, January 19, 2017 while surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late William M. Murrell III and the late Lois Brown Murrell.
Catherine is survived by one daughter, Valerie Somma and one son, Kenneth Lipscomb II, both of Forest; three sisters, Mary M. Jones and husband Donald of Lynchburg, Elizabeth D. Murrell of Forest, and Frances M. Grinnell and husband Dan of Gainesville, Va.; two grandchildren, Michael Almond & Alyssa Somma, several nieces and nephews, and a very special friend, Denis Lison. She was preceded in death by William M. Murrell IV, brother and Sharon J. Ober, niece.
Catherine was a retired underwriter for Nationwide Insurance. She loved the beach and often said the beach is where she felt closest with God. She had an amazing group of friends and enjoyed spending time with them. Catherine had quite the green thumb, and her yard showed it. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She loved people and people loved Catherine. She will be missed by many.
A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 1 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg, Va. with Brother Daniel Payne and Brother Floyd Cabell of the West Lynchburg Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service, and all other times at the residence. A private committal will be held Wednesday morning.
Catherine’s family would like to thank Dr. Dwight Oldham, the staff at Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center, and the staff of the 4E Oncology Floor at Lynchburg General Hospital for their wonderful care.
Catherine’s family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Lynchburg Humane Society.
