Cecil Dillard Jennings

Cecil D. Jennings, 93, of Lynchburg, passed away Monday, December 28, 2020. He was born March 21, 1927 in Lynchburg, VA. He was the son of the late Hallie J. Lyons.

Cecil Jennings is survived by three sisters, Della Lyons Will of Madison Heights, Edith Lyons and Shirley Lyons of Lynchburg, two brothers, Jack W. Lyons (Vivian) of Monroe, and Herbert Reed Lyons of Lynchburg.  He is also survived by a sister-in-law Freda Lyons of Norton and numerous nieces and nephews.  Cecil was preceded in death by a sister Ruby Lyons, a brother Kenneth G. Lyons, Sr, a sister-in-law Irene Lyons and a brother-in-law Francis Lee Will.

Cecil graduated from the Staunton School of the Deaf and Blind in 1943 and began a lifetime career as a printer in Hampton, Virginia. Cecil was a very active member of the deaf community. In 1947, he was one of the founding members of the Virginia Association of the Deaf Fourth Chapter, the Tidewater Chapter of the Deaf which later changed its name to the Hampton Roads Chapter of the Deaf. In 1972, Cecil relocated to Jacksonville, Florida and worked for Duplex Products, Inc. until his retirement in 1990. Cecil loved Florida and remained very active in the deaf community serving as treasurer in the Bold City Deaf Club.

After his retirement, Cecil moved to Lynchburg to lovingly care for his mother, Hallie Lyons. Cecil was always a devoted and caring grandson to his grandmother Ida Jennings. He was a beloved brother to his siblings and loved by his nieces and nephews. He was a member of Living Word Baptist Church in Forest, VA.

Cecil loved bowling, fishing, woodworking, photography, cars and travel. Cecil’s lifelong travels have taken him to Cuba, Key West, Las Vegas, San Francisco and the Grand Canyon of Arizona among many other places.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the loving care he received by the compassionate staff of Heritage Green in Lynchburg.
