It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of Celia Scott Vandegrift at age 97 on June 19, 2024 in Lynchburg. Celia was born on September 4, 1926 at her parents’ home, Glendale Manor, in Brookneal, VA.
She was preceded in death by her parents Furman “Buster” Graydon Scott and Ruth Clark DeJarnette Scott, in addition to her husband Norvell Francis Vandegrift, and dear friend Janet Ingram. She is survived by her two daughters, Mary Ruth Davis and Hope V. Wright, in addition to four grandchildren Philip Davis, (Kimberley Carter), Wesley Davis (Angie Davis), Grady Wright (Sarah Wright), and Cevell Wright, three Great-grandchildren, Samantha Davis and Lawson Davis, and Olivia Wright.
After graduating from E.C. Glass High School she attended Longwood College and graduated from Johnston Willis School of Nursing. She worked as a nurse and rose to the position of Assistant Director of Central Virginia Training Center, retiring after 42 years of service. In her retirement, she continued to advocate for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Al Jazeera America Network, BBC News, Lynchburg News, and The Richmond Times, among other local new outlets, featured Celia as she shared stories from her work in nursing and advocacy.
Celia was a member of the Eastern Star of Nathalie, DAR Red Hill Past Regent, and was a former President of the District 3 Virginia Nurses Association.
Celia’s loving spirit and signature "wink" will be missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing her.
The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the staff of Bentley Commons for their love and support. Additionally, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Laverne Little, who was her care companion and friend for many years.
A funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 267 Ebenezer Rd, Gladys, VA 24554. A visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery.
A reception will be held following the service at Glendale Manor, 2681 Swinging Bridge Rd, Brookneal, VA 24528.
Celia asked that donations be made to Ebenezer Baptist Church or a charity of your choice.
