Charles Dow Neece

Charles Dow Neece, 76, of Forest, VA, died Monday, February 7, 2011.  He was the husband of Betty Nell Hodges Neece for 54 years.

Mr. Neece was born Sunday, July 08, 1934 in Crockett, VA, a son of the late Charles W. Neece and Ruby Irvin Neece.  He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.  He was retired from Norfolk-Southern Railroad where he was a trainmaster.

Charlie was an avid outdoorsman and talented marksman.  He was the 1978 Virginia State Skeet Champion and loved duck hunting.  He had a hunting cabin that served as his second home (which would have been his first home if his family would have let him).  He was a member of Ducks Unlimited, the Sportsman Club of Halifax County, the Halifax County Gun Club and wrote a column for ten years in the Gazette-Virginian.  He was a 30-year member of Main Street United Methodist Church in South Boston then became a member of Mountain View United Methodist Church upon moving to Forest.  He was involved in his community and was a member of American Legion and Lions Club Virginia Sight First Chairman.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Bridgett Dow Pascale and husband Joe, Forest; and Holly Hodges Newton and husband, Tommy, Scottsburg; his son, Ned Irvin Neece and wife, Ginger, Marietta, GA; his sisters, Merle Hash and husband, Peyton, Roanoke; and Chesley Wiger and husband, Les, Cumming, GA; and his adored and beloved grandchildren, Joe Dow, Blake and Reed Pascale, McCoy Newton and Ethan and Emily Neece.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 PM on Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg.  A celebration of Charlie's life will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 10, 2011, at Mountain View United Methodist Church with Pastor Steve Propst officiating.  Interment will be at 1:00 PM on Friday, February 11, 2011, in Mt. Ephriam United Methodist Church Cemetery, Crockett, VA.
