Charles Frederick Flaugher \"Charlie\", 82 of Lynchburg VA died Friday morning at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born in Mooresville, IN, he was the son of the late Grover and Helen Rathbun Flaugher.
He was preceded in death by His wife, Betty Jean Beck Flaugher, and his brothers Kendrick, Donald, and Robert.
Before moving permanently to Lynchburg in 1966 Charlie was the Minister of religious education at Santa Clara Christian Church in Ohio, a teacher at Cumberland High School in Nashville, TN, a teaching Principal at Matton Elementary school in KY, and a principal for 4 years at Hillsville Elementary school in Hillsville, VA.
He was a 1956 graduate of Lynchburg College, an institution that was near and dear to his heart. He received his M. A. from George Peabody College for Teachers in 1959 and his Ed. S. from the University of Virginia in 1971. From 1966 to 1994 he was an Associate Professor in the School of Education. In this role he served as the coordinator of secondary education, director of testing services, and supervised numerous student teachers. He also was the media consultant to the Education Department, was the director of the campus-wide instructional media center, past chairman of the publications committee, and served on the student social board. Additionally, he was a member of the teacher preparation program council and was the chairman of the student teaching admissions committee.
Charlie was also involved in many activities outside of work. He was the past chairman of the state license and ordination committee and past president of the state assembly of the Virginia Christian Churches. He was a charter member and past chair of the board of Timberlake Christian Church as well as an elder and Sunday school teacher. He served as president of the Heritage High School Band Boosters and was a board member of the Lynchburg City High School Boosters. He served on the Executive Board of the Lynchburg Democratic committee and was invited to be a delegate to the 1985 Democratic State Convention.
Of all of Charlie\"™s accomplishments, he was most proud of his daughter Rose. Charlie did whatever was necessary to help Rose achieve her goals – whether it be wearing bright orange pants as a band booster for the B.O.M.M., his constant presence at all of her athletic events, or serving as \"shuttle bunny\" for her many kayaking adventures, Charlie\"™s mission in life was to ensure his daughter\"™s happiness.
Charlie was known around town as a true people person and was always willing to turn any and every event into a party. He had a fun-loving spirit that made him friends wherever he went. He enjoyed his Wednesday night dinners with the \"Rent-A-Friends,\" breakfast every morning at his favorite spot, and a good round of golf.
Charlie is survived by his Daughter, Rose Ellen Flaugher, Lynchburg VA and many nieces and nephews from all over the country.
