Charles Vaughn Gilbert of Madison Heights, age 78, passed away due to a long illness.
Born in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Bryd Gilbert and Vernie Austin Gilbert. Charles was a disabled Vietnam veteran, and was an employee at Old Dominion Box Company for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters.
He enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling, and you could always find him on Friday and Saturday nights at Natural Bridge Speedway. He spent many years cheering on his children and grandchildren in their selected sports. He also had a great love for animals, and a special place in his heart for his dog Adele.
Charles is survived by his loving wife, Annette Buraker Gilbert, whom he spent a beautiful life and marriage with for 38 years. He is also survived by his two children, Kimberly Michelle Gilbert, (son in law Marvin Eugene Toliver Jr), and Jonathan Michael Gilbert (friend Keneisha Turner), his two beautiful grandchildren, Abrielle Jane Toliver and Sophia Marie Toliver, his mother in law, Loretta Carol Buraker, and many friends and family whom all brought him so much happiness.
A public visitation will be held on Saturday, February 22nd from 6-8PM, and a military service and memorial will be held Sunday, February 23rd, at 3PM. All services will be held at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Madison Heights.
Charles will be missed by all who knew him. His legacy will live on with memories of laughter and love.
