Charles Raymond Graham, affectionately known as "Charlie," passed away on November 16, 2024, at the age of 90. Born on April 1, 1934, in McComas, West Virginia, Charlie was the son of the late Josephine and Cletus Graham.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Buddy Graham and Bobby Joe Graham, and his sisters, Leona Clemons and Margaret Ann Graham. He is survived by his beloved sister Lou Wellman and her husband W.D. Wellman, who remain cherished members of his family. Charlie also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who fondly remember his warmth and humor.
Charlie is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 66 years, Joy Graham, and their children: daughters, Theresa Y. Graham, Deborah Graham Hammersley (husband Ken), and son Charles R. Graham Jr. (wife Melinda). He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Nicole Farish (husband Shawn) and their children Bella, Juliana, Harper, and Riley; Brittany Burke (husband Connor) and their children Penelope and Chloe; Paige Graham, Jensen Graham, and Charles Ryan Graham.
An Air Force veteran, Charlie proudly served his country during the Korean War. Before his military service, he was known as "Raymond" to his family and "Rabbit" to his friends. A high school basketball star, he led his team to a state championship as a point guard, a role he cherished second only to his time in the Air Force.
Charlie’s life was defined by hard work, resilience, and a no-nonsense attitude. Born the son of a coal miner, he understood that success came through perseverance. For over 50 years, Charlie dedicated himself to the City of Lynchburg Public Works Department, earning a reputation as a dependable and hardworking individual.
Charlie also deeply valued family, forming close bonds with his wife Joy’s siblings and embracing them as his own. He enjoyed life’s simple pleasures—dancing with Joy every Saturday night alongside close friends Carrie and Swanson Johnson and hosting Sunday cookouts with the same beloved companions.
Charlie’s quick wit, unwavering work ethic, and genuine love for those around him will leave a lasting impact. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
