Charles Henry Carpenter, Jr., 90, of Huddleston, Virginia, passed away on April 5, 2015 at
Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born in New York City on March 8, 1925. The son of
the late Charles Henry Carpenter, Sr. and Madeline Marjorie Linker, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margareta Meijer Carpenter and his younger brother, Norman Carpenter.
Charles served his country in the United States 20th Air Force as First Lieutenant and
Bombardier with the 677th Squadron , 444 th Bombardment Group , 58 th Wing during the Pacific
Theater of WWII and also the Korean Conflict. He received the Air Medal, American Campaign
Medal, WWII Victory Medal and the Distinguished Unit Badge.
A 30 year resident of Smith Mountain Lake, Charles’s hobbies included being an avid
Washington Redskin fan and a part time bottle collector. Throughout his life, he was known for his creative abilities in woodworking, building, and landscaping his properties. Charles received
a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Colby College and his master’s in Hotel Administration from Cornell University. Travel was Charles’s lifelong passion both personally and professionally, taking him to all corners of the globe. His career with the American Automobile
Association spanned over thirty years.
Charles is survived by his three daughters, Karyn Carpenter, Kristy Rollins and Kymbal Walz, along with his six grandchildren, Tyler and Amber Noyes, and Andrew, Alex, Eric, and Emma
Walz.
An internment service was held at Arlington National Cemetery on January 4, 2016 at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Foundation.
