Charles “C.R.” Raine Oliver, Jr., of Big Island, died Monday November 9, 2015. He was the devoted husband of Clara Crotts Oliver for over 59 years.
C.R. was born October 28, 1929, in Big Island a son of the late Charles Raine Oliver, Sr. and Evelyn Arrington Oliver. He honorably served his country in the Virginia National Guard and was retired from his lifelong work as a farmer. He will be remembered for his quick wit, his stories, sausage making, and for his love of the community and people of Big Island. C.R. was also a member of Big Island Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Tim R. Oliver and wife, Carol of Lynchburg, Kitty Mauch and husband, Tim of Mechanicsville, and Dotty Spradlin and special friend, Randy of Big Island; one brother, J. Gary Oliver and wife, Brenda of Big Island; seven grandchildren, Tim Oliver and wife, Melanie, Trevor Oliver and wife, Ariel, Benjamin Mauch, Virginia Mauch, Meredith Mauch, Raine Spradlin, and Simon Spradlin; seven great-grandchildren, Kylie, Edie, Avery, and Archer Oliver, Zofie, Alex, and Remy Dieffenbach.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday November 11, 2015, at Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg.
A Celebration of C.R.’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 12, 2015, at Big Island Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Watkins officiating. A reception will follow the service at the church.
Memorials may be made to the Big Island Baptist Church “Missions Committee”, 10747 Lee-Jackson Highway, Big Island, VA 24526.
