Charles Sullivan

Charles Cannon Sullivan III, 82, of Lynchburg, VA, passed away Sunday, January 19th, 2014, at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of 56 years to Alice Fenn Diggs Sullivan. Charles was born October 15, 1931 in Memphis, TN. He was the son of the late Charles Cannon Sullivan, Jr. and the late Martha Lovett Tabb Sullivan. Charles was a graduate of Southwestern at Memphis (Rhodes College) and the University of Mexico. He proudly served in the United States Army. Charles had a long business career, which included serving as President/CEO of Schering-Plough, Canada, Gem Inc. and owning several companies. He was an Elder and long-term active member of Germantown Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian in Brownsville, TN. His passion for mission work and education included multiple mission trips to Brazil, Mexico and New Orleans. On a recent trip to Brazil, Charles began the work of building a school that his family will continue to support. He was a tutor and mentor with Head Start and the Boys & Girls Club. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels and was active in Rotary Club International. Charles was known by his family and friends as a world traveler and as a horseracing enthusiast.

         In addition to his wife, Charles is survived by his three brothers, William Sullivan of Mayflower, AR, Dr. Joseph Sullivan of Memphis, TN and James Sullivan of Charlottesville, VA; three children, Elizabeth S. Dilworth and her husband, George, of Roswell, GA, Charles Cannon Sullivan IV and his wife, Margaret (Nena), of Woodland Hills, CA. and Susan S. Edwards and her husband, Bart, of Forest, VA; and four grandchildren, Rollans Edwards, Scott Dilworth, Carter Lee Edwards and Alison Dilworth. A Memorial Service to celebrate Charles\"™ life will be held at Germantown Presbyterian Church at 10:30 am, February 24, 2014 with the Reverend Will Jones officiating. A reception for family and friends will be held at the church following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children\"™s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org) or Living Waters for the World (www.livingwatersfortheworld.org).
