Charles E. Tanner departed this life on April 23, 2024. He was born on March 17, 1936 (Saint Patrick’s Day) in Concord, VA, a son of the late Charles R. Tanner and Alma G. Tanner.

Charles proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps and worked as a carpenter in Washington D.C. until his retirement. He lived most of his life in Washington D.C., that is where his love for the Washington Redskins started. Charles watched the Redskins, now called the Commanders religiously, he never missed a game. Even his bedroom was decorated with memorabilia.

In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara A. Tanner.

Charles is survived by his spouse, Helen Tanner; sister, Eura T. Jackson (Ernest), who he had a special love for; three sons, Charles Tanner, Anthony Tanner, and Vincent Tanner; one step-son, Larry Lyttle (Queen); one daughter, Tonya Thomas; three special nieces, whom were his caretakers, and he had unconditional love for, Denise Barnett (Harvey), Amanda Morgan (William), and Doris Jackson, whom he always had a smile on his face for; 18 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and nine great - great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at 11 a.m. at New Vine Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Do not grieve for me, for I am now free. I took his hand when I heard his call, I turned my back, and I left it all. If my parting has left a void, then fill it with remembered   joy.
