Charles Thomas Miles, Sr. passed away on May 31, 2017. He was born May 27, 1938 of the late Nelson and Connie Miles of Evington, Virginia.
Charles operated the Rustburg Esso, later becoming Rustburg Auto. The station remained a corner institution of talk, tall tales, drink, gas and mechanics for over 40 years. Charles lived his life full throttle and always did it his way, not necessarily the easy way. He has many passions, the first being farming “The Ward Place” followed by fishing, hunting, gardening, traveling and perfecting the art of BBQ. There is no question he mastered curing the perfect Virginia Country Ham.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by son, Charles T. “Tommy” Miles Jr., and sister, Sallie Henry.
Charles is survived by daughter Julie Miles of White Post, her mother, Kay Miles Montgomery, a sister Anna Meekins of Virginia Beach, a brother Nelson Miles Jr and wife Debbie of Evington, companion Josephine Wells of Rustburg, and grandchildren Whitney Miles and her fiancé, Joshua Field of Lynchburg, Summer Miles of White Post and Savannah Miles of Rustburg.
The family extends deep gratitude to Charlie Droog, a solid friend to Charles, and to Charles’ caretaker Melissa Stapleton. Charles’ last request was to see his sister Anna in Va. Beach and against all reasonable measure Melissa made it happen. Charles got to go one more time.
Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 5, 2017 at Rustburg Baptist Church, Rustburg, Va. with Rev. Roger Roller officiating. The family will greet friends in the fellowship hall after the service.
In lieu for flowers, contributions may be made to Rustburg Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 206, Rustburg, Va. 24588 or Centra Hospice, 2097 Langhorne Road, Lynchburg, Va. 24501.
Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
