Charles Cooper Youell III, 84, of Lynchburg, died Tuesday, March 4, at his home. Born March 6, 1940, in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late Mary Catherine Frost and Charles Cooper Youell, Jr.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Sarah Massie of 62 years; his son, Cooper (Cabell) of Roanoke and his daughter, Page Eastman (John) of Lynchburg and three grandchildren: Jack, Sam and Sarah Eastman.
He is also survived by his brothers-in-law William Massie (Nan) and Kent Massie (Ann) and many nieces and nephews.
Charlie was a 1958 graduate of Lane High School and 1963 graduate of Virginia Tech. He remained an avid fan and lifelong supporter of the Hokies.
Charlie served his country and was a Vietnam veteran. After leaving the Army, he had a 30-year career with Babcock and Wilcox. He retired in 2018 from the City of Lynchburg Parks & Recreation after 17 years.
Charlie loved working with his hands and never seemed to run out of projects. He particularly enjoyed maintaining the Blackwater Creek Trail and volunteering with Master Gardener programs.
A funeral service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 605 Clay Street, Lynchburg, VA, 24504 at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2025, with a reception following. A private burial service will be held at a later date at the family cemetery in Tyro.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to: St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Grace Episcopal Church, Massies Mill, VA 22967 or Park View Community Mission, 2420 Memorial Avenue, Lynchburg, VA 24501.
