Charlie Lee Marshall

April 4, 1938 — February 21, 2023

Charlie Lee Marshall was born on April 4th, 1938, in Lynchburg, VA to Winifred and Lewis Marshall. He departed on February 21st, 2023. At a young age, Charlie became a member of Holcomb Rock Baptist Church. He graduated from Susie G. Gibson High School. Shortly after graduating, he married Doris Braxton. Charlie then served 2 years in the United States Army. Always having a fondness for cars, Charlie then worked at General Motors for 39 years. He started on the assembly line and later served as President of Local 595 of United Auto Workers in Linden, NJ.

In 2007, Charlie retired and moved back to Lynchburg, VA. He remained a member of Holcomb Rock Baptist and served as trustee. During retirement he joined Robert F. Braxton Masonic Lodge 318 of Madison Heights, VA. He also became a member of the American Legion Post 16.

Charlie was a huge football and golf fan. He loved the Los Angeles Rams; his favorite player was #99 Aaron Donald. He loved everything about cars and enjoyed going for rides in his 1974 Convertible Chevrolet Caprice. He enjoyed traveling and vacationing with family. Considered by many family members as Mr. Fix It, no matter what was broken he would repair it. Charlie enjoyed sitting on his deck watching the mountains, usually with a cold one. He was affectionately known as “Poppy” to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was considered a godfather to numerous of his nieces and nephews. Poppy was always there to give advice to anyone that needed it, no matter what. He was one of a kind, completely irreplaceable and will be missed immensely.

Charlie leaves to cherish his memories, his beloved wife Doris Marshall; two daughters Tina Amir and Vera Marshall and goddaughter Kerri T. Payne-Thomas; three sisters Felipa Scott, Margaret Brown (Clarence) and Christine Braxton (Curtis); brother James Marshall; three sister in-laws May Breedlove, Vivian Braxton, Clarisa Dawson (Henry); brother in-law Lorenzo Braxton (Linda). He also leaves behind seven granddaughters: Tahirah Marshall, Talia Marshall, Atiyah Marshall, Shaniquah Irvin, Halimah Amir, Khadijah Marshall, and Aajah Tate. He is survived by a host of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, which he cherished with heartfelt love.
