Charlie Martin Gibson, Sr., 80, of Lynchburg, died Friday, July 15, 2011, at the Summit Health and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness. He was the loving husband of Ruby Cofflin Gibson for 53 years.
orn in Charlotte County, July 10, 1931 he was a son of the late Fred Washington Gibson and Blanche Shields Gibson. As a young man, Charlie served in the U. S. Navy. He was employed at General Electric and Ericson for 39 years as an Electronics Technician. Charlie was an avid golfer and truly loved the game. The church of his choice was Tree of Life Ministries.
In addition to his wife, Ruby Gibson, he is survived by a daughter, Joan Deal and husband, Bob; a son, Charlie (Marty) Gibson Jr, and wife, Julie; his five beloved grandchildren; Ryan Gibson, Lauren Gibson, Alex Deal, Nick Deal, Grace Deal all of Lynchburg; and two sisters, Eva Crider and Agnes Covington of Amelia County, Va. In addition, Charlie leaves behind a number of nieces and nephews; Moncie Gibson, Jr., Lois New, Shirley Twisdale, Clyde Moore, Kenny Moore, Christine Compton; Doris Farren; Joyce Guthrie, Roger Overstreet and Morris Overstreet.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Moncie Gibson and wife, Ruby; and three sisters, Hattie Gibson, Zola Overstreet and Ruby King.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m., Monday July 18, 2011 at Tharp Funeral Home with the Pastor Mike Dodson of Tree of Life Ministries Officiating. Burial will follow in Virginia Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at 1:00 p.m. Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg.
