Charlie “Dick†William Mathews, Sr. of Lynchburg died Monday, May 12, 2014 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of the late Cora Rebecca Mays Mathews. Born October 21, 1929 in Amherst County he was the son of the late Charlie Wesley Mathews and Effie Moore Mathews. Charlie was a retired truck driver and a member of Beulah Methodist Church. Charlie loved to hunt and fish with his twin brother, Joe, and compete to see who would get the most. If his brother was ahead of him he wanted to keep fishing or hunting, but if he was ahead then it was time to pack up and go home. They both had a paper route and they would even race to see who could finish their route the fastest. Charlie was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Natasha Jean Arnold; brothers, Harry, Gordon, and Edward “Buck†Mathews; sisters: Dorothy Mathews, Helen Louise Mathews, Mable Virginia Pillow, and Ann Tetter. Charlie is survived by his two sons: Charlie W. (Christie) Mathews, Jr., Richard (April) Mathews; daughters, Betty (Dale) Arnold, Sharon (Curtis) Moreland and her companion Larry Smith; companion of 18 years, Louise Irvin; brothers: Frank “Dewey†Mathews, Clyde (Faye) Mathews, Charlie’s twin brother Robert “Joe†(Marilyn) Mathews; sisters: Margaret Hostetter, Catherine Frances Webster; grandchildren: Nathan Arnold, Dakota Minnix, Blake Minnix, Lauren (Evan) Slayton, Haydon Almond, Landon Mathews and Ricky Moreland. A funeral service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Tharp Funeral Home located at 220 Breezewood Drive, conducted by the Rev. Marvin Suitt. The family will receive friends after the service until 9:00 p.m. Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory, Lynchburg (434-237-9424) is assisting the family.
