Charlie W. “C.W.” Johnson

Charlie William \"C.W.\" Johnson, 80, of Lynchburg, died Thursday, February 3, 2011.  He was the husband of Jerry Beth Harbour Johnson for 56 years.

C.W. was born Sunday, January 4, 1931 in Mecklenburg County, a son of the late John Cohen Johnson, Sr. and Stella Bowling Johnson.  He grew up on a tobacco farm where he learned remarkable common sense, how to work with his hands so that he could fix anything and how to pitch and love the game of baseball. Following graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and proudly served our country during the Korean Conflict.  He was the original contrarian and a master of time, knowing how to balance his love of travel, his work as store manager of Grand Union, being faithful to his God and his church, Rivermont Avenue Baptist, and being a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Clifford W. Johnson and wife, Beth, Reston, Calvin G. Johnson and wife, Cindy, Berryville, Chris C. Johnson and wife, Kathryn, Waynesboro, and Clinton E. Johnson, Itasca, IL; and twelve grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Charles A. Johnson, and a brother, John Cohen Johnson, Jr.

A celebration of C.W.'s life will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Sunday, February 6, 2011, at Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathaniel B. \"Nick\" Habel officiating.  Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 16.  The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
