Charlotte Anne Martin Crews of Altavista, Virginia (formerly of Portsmouth, Va.) went home to be with her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, July 11, 2017.
Born May 24, 1937, she was preceded in death by her husband, Garland William Crews, Sr.; parents, Herbert Jordan Martin and Violet Heptinstall Martin; and her brother, Herbert Wayne Martin.
Charlotte enjoyed working with young people and for ten years, devoted time as an adult volunteer for 4-H Camps. For many years, she served as a Sunday school teacher at her church. Her creative talents were many and included floral arranging, teaching gourmet cooking classes, needle work and china painting. She volunteered with Centra Health Hospice. She was an Eastern Star member and past Worthy Matron of the Altavista Chapter. She is a current member of Rustburg Chapter 23.
Charlotte is survived by her son, Garland William Crews, Jr. (Bill); three grandchildren, Courtney Lynn Crews, Garland William Crews III (Trey), and Erika Umstead; a great-grandson, Layne William Crews; two sisters, Jane Martin Wood and husband Chip of Wilmington, N.C. and Mary Martin Dalton and husband, Gary, of Port St. Lucie, FL; two sisters-in-law, Marilyn Martin of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Ruby Crews Myers, of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother in-law, Clifton Crews of Buckingham, Va.; a special friend, Brenda Grubbs of Altavista, Va.; and many nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved.
The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2017, in the Chapel of Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A Celebration of Charlotte’s Life will follow at 5 p.m., with the Rev. Randy Parker officiating. A private inurnment will be held at Mentow Baptist Church Columbarium.
