Chester Sturgill, 88, of Roanoke, VA, formally of Livingston, KY, completed his journey on earth Saturday, December 2, 2017, after a long, hard fought battle to live.
He was preceded in death by his parents John Sturgill and Emma Thomas Sturgill. Chester also had brothers and sisters precede him in death.
Chester is survived by the love of his life, his adoring wife of 63 years, Cora, formally of Millboro, VA; a brother, J.T. Sturgill; a sister, Gladys Baker; a daughter, Dee McCafferty; a son, Gary Sturgill; a granddaughter, Shawna; and three great grandchildren.
Chester proudly served his country in the U. S. Army during the nineteen fifties. After his service, he worked as a master diesel mechanic and was instrumental in the construction of Interstate 64 and other major construction projects.
Chester’s last years were spent enjoying the peace of his backyard and inspiring others by his example of living with peaceful determination through illness. Chester is sorely missed by all those who knew and loved him.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and at the Salem Veteran’s Administration Medical Center for the wonderful care and attention Chester received while at both facilities.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Family and friends are invited to visit the family home.
Please, in lieu of flowers, the family asks for your thoughts and prayers.
Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory – Roanoke Chapel is assisting the family.
