Christopher Billings, 80, of Lynchburg, died on May 30, 2018 at Lynchburg General Hospital while surrounded by family.
Born on February 27, 1938, in Cambridge, MA, Chris was the eldest son of the late James Billings and the late Marion Bridgman.
In addition to his parents, Chris was preceded in death by his youngest brother, Robert Bryant Billings.
Chris is survived by his sister, Rachel Trobaugh of Racine, WI, brother Benton James Billings of Taos, NM, sister-in-law Rose Billings of Arkansas City, KS, former wife and mother of his children Nancy Mooney of Toledo, OH, and his children, son David Billings of West Yarmouth, MA, daughter Deborah Nicholls and son-in-law Jonathan Nicholls of Brockton, MA, daughter Susan Billings and son-in-law Patrick Brennan of Tucson, AZ, and son James Billings and daughter-in-law Christine Billings of Amherst, VA. He is also survived by his four grandchildren Sebastian, Isabella, and Lilith Billings of Amherst, VA, and Naosha Lestat of Worcester, VT.
Chris grew up in Lincoln, Massachusetts where he attended Concord High School. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from Oberlin College and pursued a Master’s Degree in Education from Rutgers University. Chris initiated what turned out to be a life-long love of math in elementary school, and as a teenager came to realize its power to unlock the secrets of the universe. He worked as a computer programmer for several multi-national corporations, including Honeywell, Exxon, Data General, Chemproha BV, and Raytheon. Chris participated in the civil rights movement in the 1960’s and was, throughout his life, a strong advocate for human rights. He was a member of Amnesty International, and he wrote many letters to members of Congress as well as leaders of foreign governments on behalf of oppressed persons. After retirement, Chris relocated from New Bedford, Massachusetts to Lynchburg, where he became an active member of the First Unitarian Church on Court Street.
A Celebration of Chris’s Life will be held at the First Unitarian Church of Lynchburg at 818 Court Street on Saturday, June 16th 2018 at 3:00 pm.
