Claiborne Watkins Craddock

Claiborne Watkins Craddock died on May 15, 2012 at Lynchburg General Hospital after a long and joyful life. He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia on September 10, 1925, the son of George Gilmer Craddock and Nan Atkinson Craddock.

He leaves behind his wife of 30 years, Jerry G. Craddock and three daughters, Cullen Craddock of Charlottesville, Virginia, Libba Dudley (Cabell) of Lynchburg, Virginia, and Mary Brooke Guernier (Jeff) of Greensboro, North Carolina. He is survived by two step daughters, Linda Forehand to Tuxedo, North Carolina, and Karen Howard of Hilton Head, South Carolina, three grandchildren, Carrington Dudley of Lynchburg, Jeff and Clay Guernier of Greensboro, and step grandchildren Max, Brandon, and Ryan Howard. He is also survived by his brother John Wimbish Craddock and wife, Emily Gunn Craddock, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Claybo cherished his family and will join two brothers, Dr. Paul Tulane Craddock and George Gilmer Craddock and wife Martha Helen, and his sister Anne Craddock Hammerstrom and husband William Neil Hammerstrom.

He loved life, a good story, his family and countless friends. His presence could light up a room and his sense of humor and huge smile were legendary among them. He was a graduate of E.C. Glass High School and Hampden-Sydney College. He was employed as a Vice President at Craddock-Terry Shoe Corporation where he worked for 37 years. He served our country in World War II, in Company C, 347th Infantry, 87th Division, fighting on the Central European Front and participating in the Battle of the Bulge, for which he was awarded two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star. He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon and enjoyed many years volunteering and spreading his own special charm at Virginia Baptist Hospital.

Following a private family service in the Columbarium Garden at First Presbyterian Church, there will be a memorial service celebrating his life at the church on Friday, May 18, at 11:00 am. The family will receive friends in the Narthex of the church immediately following the service and in The Hume Room at Westminster Canterbury on Thursday, May 17 from 5:00 \"" 6:30 pm.
