Clarence Edward Hawkins, 96, of Bedford, Virginia passed away on August 7, 2023. He was the son of the late Major Alfred Hawkins and Beatrice Ophelia Padgett Hawkins, and the husband of the late Thelma Peake Arthur Hawkins.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Hawkins is predeceased by his first wife, Helena Torian Hawkins; brothers, Alfred Hawkins, and Lloyd Hawkins; and sisters, Louise Bishop, and Neda Craig: daughter, Chery A. Hawkins and Granddaughter, Amanda A. Key.
Mr. Hawkins was born on July 10, 1927, in Bedford County, Virgina. Mr. Hawkins was the Chief Engineer for Merchant Marines for 40 years and bravely served his country in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. He was a devoted member of the Elks Club, Lions Club, Moose Club, and Bedford Gobbler Club.
Mr. Hawkins is survived by his daughter, Robbie Key (Ted); his grandchildren, Cory Key (Cathy), William “Jared” Key; two great- grandchildren, John Austin Key, Helena E. Key; numerous nieces and nephews; and many loving friends in the community.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, August 18, 2023, at the Hawkins Family Cemetery (3363 Lizard Ridge Rd, Bedford, Virginia) with Reverend Michael Khol officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bedford Baptist Church (1516 Oakwood St., Bedford, Virginia), Bedford Life Saving Crew (311 Bedford Ave., Bedford, Virginia), or the Prostate Cancer Foundation (1250 Fourth Street, Santa Monica, CA 90401).
