Clarence Ray Calhoun

Clarence Ray Calhoun, 98, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, August 15, 2021. He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia on October 12, 1922, the son of the late Clarence H. Calhoun and Lola Hawkins Calhoun. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years, Bernice M. Calhoun and his sister and brother-in-law, Jean C. and Lawrence W. Falwell. He is survived by his son, C.W. “Bill” Calhoun, and wife Linda, his grandson W. Garth Calhoun and wife Erin, and great grandson W. Grady Calhoun, all of Madison Heights, Virginia.

Ray Graduated from E.C. Glass High School in 1941. Following his graduation from high school, Ray became employed with Southern Parts & Bearing Co., Inc. as an automotive machinist. After 10 years at Southern Parts, Ray purchased a Dodge Dealership in Lovingston, Virginia. After 15 years in the automotive business, Ray terminated his dealership and became associated with The Bank of Central Virginia (later Bank of Virginia and now BB&T). Ray retired from Bank of Virginia after 20 years where he has served as a Vice President, member of the local Bank Board, and Manager of the Madison Heights branch in Madison Heights, Virginia. Following his retirement from Bank of Virginia, Ray became associated with Community First Bank (later BB&T and now Truist Bank) where he served as an Assistant Vice President and Manager of the Madison Heights Office for 2 years. Following his association with Community First Bank, Ray served on the local BB&T Board in 1999 and 2000, and he was the past president of the Amherst County Chamber of Commerce.

Ray was a member (now closed) of Memorial Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for over 55 years where he had served as Trustee, Elder, and Chairman of the Official Board and Congregation on serval occasions. Following the closing of Memorial Christian, Ray became a member and attended Union Christian Church in Madison Heights, Virginia.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 19, 2021, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg with Rev. Jim Freeman and Rev. Kyle Clements officiating. Interment with follow at Fort Hill Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
