Claude lee Watson, Jr., 80, of Moneta, VA passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 1, 2010. Born in Winston-Salem, NC on January 19, 1930 to Claude Lee and Sadie Thompson Watson.
Claude attended schools in Winston-Salem and North Carolina State University. He retired in 1990 after 28 years with Westinghouse Oceanic Division in Annapolis, MD. The 37 years in Maryland permitted him to enjoy his passion for sailing on the Chesapeake Bay. In 1998, Claude and Marty moved to Smith Mountain Lake where he enjoyed membership in the Antique & Classic Boats Society. A very talented boat builder he loved wooden boats and also was a restorer and builder of wooden canvas canoes with membership in the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association. An Eagle Scout he proudly carried his card in his billfold.
Claude is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Martha \"Marty\" Watson, a sister and brother-in-law, Sara and Garland Ladd of Winston-Salem, NC; and five nieces and nephews.
In accordance with his wishes no services are planned. Following cremation, inurnment will be at a later date in Winston-Salem, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Moneta Vol. Fire Department 12737 N. Old Moneta Rd., Moneta, VA 24121 or Moneta Rescue Squad, 12646 N. Old Moneta Rd., Moneta, VA 24121.
Claude would like for his family and friends to remember the happy times sailing, canoeing, fishing, crabbing and talking wooden boats.
