Clayton Delaware Trent
August 24, 1932 — February 9, 2018
Clayton Delaware Trent, 85, died early Friday, February 9, 2018 at home with his family. He was the husband of Shelby Carson Trent, for 62 years.
Born Wednesday, August 24, 1932 in Amherst County, Clayton was the son of the late Charles Faulkner Trent and Rosa Eller Trent. In addition to his wife, Clayton is survived by his son Richard Clayton Trent, and his wife Amy; two grandchildren Ben and Summer Trent; and sisters Rosa Tweedy and Jean Childress. He was greeted in heaven by his beloved daughter Deborah Lynne Trent Grishaw; and siblings Kathleen Tweedy, Glenola Trent, Helen Johnson, Myrtis Harding, Lee Trent, and Charles Trent.
At the age of 18 Clayton was drafted into the U.S. Army where he proudly served in the 101st Airborne Division’s Screaming Eagles during the Korean War from 1953 to 1955. Clayton came home and fell in love with Shelby Jean Carson, whom he married on August, 20 of 1955 in South Carolina.
In Lynchburg he worked at JNO. E. Gannaway & Co. Inc. Hardware and Agricultural Implements store before going on to become a dedicated warehouseman at Mead Corporation paper mill, now WestRock, for 43 years. Throughout it all he ran a beef cattle operation on the family farm in Campbell County. His passion and love of the farm were evident to all. Just two weeks prior to his passing he was still sitting on the back deck calling to his cattle in a way only he could do. He is known for, and will always be remembered for, his unimpeachable work ethic, will power, and feistiness. He defended his cattle as fiercely as he protected his family and those that he loved.
His death leaves a tremendous void in the lives of his family and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, 220 Breezewood Dr., Lynchburg. A celebration of Clayton’s life will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at Calvary Baptist Church of Concord, which Clayton was a member of, with Rev. Frank Casper and Pastor Chad Harris officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery.
