Clayton Grant Jones

Clayton Grant Jones, 79, drifted quietly into Eternity, Sunday morning, September 30, 2012, at the Oaks in Lynchburg, VA. At his side were his three adoring daughters, Suzanne Peniche, Debbie Farris and Angie Tucker, as well as three grandchildren and a son-in-law.

 Clayton was preceded in death by his adopted parents Mr. & Mrs. Robert E. Jones.

 In addition to his three daughters he is survived by a sister, Jean Miller, of Aiken, SC; three sons-in-law, John Peniche, Ricky Farris and Mike Tucker; four grandchildren, Cristina & Joseph Peniche, Bronwyn Farris and Abigail Tucker. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews of the Grant family whom he got to know in the latter years of his life.

 Born on November 9,1932 in Nelson Co., VA, Clayton overcame severe challenges in his youth to avail himself of opportunities to excel under the nurture of his adopted family and encouragement of mentors and peers. He distinguished himself at E.C. Glass High School as an athlete in all manner of sports, especially track, football and basketball. His athletic achievements can still be viewed in the trophy cases at E.C. Glass to this day. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Clayton earned his bachelor\"™s degree from Lynchburg College. He pursued a career in Sales with Strother Drug Company during which he frequently achieved top salesman awards.

 Ever the Athlete, Clayton took up the sport of Tennis at the age of 40 in which he also excelled and gained an ever growing circle of friends including admiring competitors of men much his junior.

 Clayton was a very generous man in a quiet way favoring individuals facing various disadvantages in addition to supporting mainstream charities such as Lynchburg College, Veterans Association and others.

 Family visitation is set for 6:00 \"" 8:00 pm on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at Tharp Funeral Home. A Celebration of life service is set for 11:00 am, Wednesday, October 3, 2012 also at Tharp Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service at Fort Hill Memorial Gardens.

 In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the Children\"™s Home Society of Virginia, 4200 Fitzhugh Ave., Richmond, VA 23230 or to the American Cancer Society, 205 Langhorne Rd. Suite 201, Lynchburg, VA 24501.
