Clyde Johnson Karnes, 89, of Bedford died on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Oakwood Health & Rehabilitation Center in Bedford.
Clyde was born on September 28, 1923, the son of the late Albert Cleveland Karnes and Kate Toms Karnes. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Estelle Hawkins Karnes; his two granddaughters, Mary Katherine Garner and Chyrl Starr Garner; one sister, Lois Karnes and four brothers, Eugene Karnes, Dean Karnes, Albert Karnes and Claude Karnes.
Clyde was a faithful member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Bedford. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and was employed by Sam Moore Furniture in Bedford for more than forty years.
Clyde is survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law, Gloria Karnes Moore and husband, Garry of Wardensville, WV and Chyrl Karnes Sheffey and husband, John of Lynchburg, Virginia. He is also survived by two sisters, Catherine and Rebecca Karnes of Roanoke; three sisters-in-law, Estelle Karnes, Dorothy Karnes, and Offie Karnes; brother-in-law, Jack Hawkins and wife, Norma; also numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staffs of Carriage Hill Retirement Center and Oakwood Health and Rehabilitation Center for the loving care that Clyde received during the last fourteen months of his life.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 505, Bedford, VA 24523.
Funeral services will be held at Main Street United Methodist Church at 11:00 am on Tuesday, April 30, 2013. The family will receive friends on Monday, April 29, 2013 from 5:00 until 8:00 pm at Tharp Funeral Home in Bedford. Arrangements by Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford, (540)-586-3443.
