Clyde L. Garbee Sr., 89 of Forest, passed away on June 25, 2015. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Julia Schmitt Garbee, a brother, Keith Garbee and his wife Adreana and one sister-in-law, Rachael Garbee of Arlington. He was a member of Lakewood Baptist Church.
Clyde was born on January 25, 1926 to the late William Tyler Garbee and Lillie Belle Lawhorne Garbee. He grew up on Airport Road as one of seven children. Clyde was in the Navy during WWII where he served at Chincoteague and elsewhere in Virginia. Clyde was a simple man that loved his family, friends and his many stories. He loved to spend many quiet hours in his garden, enjoyed fishing at the ocean and his love for music.
In 1946, he began working in earth moving with projects from highway work to subdivisions to the construction of Ivy Lake. In 1969 to 1970 following Hurricane Camille, he helped with the extensive clean-up operations to restore Nelson County. In 2008 Clyde finally retired for the third time.
Clyde leaves to cherish his memory his son C. Lewis Garbee Jr. and wife Molly of Forest, his daughter, Joyce Siddons and husband Rev. Dr. James Siddons of Forest and his son Steven R. Garbee also of Forest.
He also leaves behind two grandchildren, Myra G. Schmitt of Rustburg and Adam T. Garbee and wife Kelly of Lynchburg, as well as seven great grandchildren and one great great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
We would also like to express our deep gratitude to Ann Kostel and Melanie Bieri for the loving care and attention extended by them during his illness and also to Dr. David Smith, Dr. William Brown and physicians and staff of Lynchburg General Hospital.
Mr. Garbee is predeceased by three brothers and two sisters – William Garbee, Earnest Garbee, Howard Garbee, Charlotte Wooldridge and Marion Hamner.
