Colin Spencer Caldwell, 88, of Lynchburg, passed away on Sunday, March 11, 2018 after an illness of several months. The son of the late C.S. “Jack” Caldwell and the late Marion Newman Caldwell, he was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Later he became an American citizen.
Colin graduated from Syracuse University and received his Master’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His Ph. D. in Chemical Engineering was from the University of Washington.
He worked with several companies over the years, but ended his career at Babock and Wilcox where his positions were in Lynchburg Research Center and the Naval Nuclear Fuel Division. His title was Senior Scientist when he retired.
Colin is survived by his wife of over thirty years, Naomi Walker Caldwell, and by five children: Marion C. Carson of New Kensington, Pa., James “Jaime” B. Caldwell of Annapolis, Md. and his wife Ann, Nancy M. Lowman of Leechburg, Pa., Stephanie L. Hackwelder of Fox Chapel, Pa., and her husband John and Heather C. Merrell of Fremont of Calif. and her husband Loren.
He is also survived by three stepchildren: Lisa E. Ackers of Lynchurg, Va., Sandra L. Ackers and her husband Bryan of San Francisco, Calif. and Keith J. Ackers and his wife Mimi of West Chester, Pa.
He is survived by eight grandchildren. There was a granddaughter who predeceased him. He is also survived by two step grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Colin was an elder at First Presbyterian Church, Lynchburg, and a founder of the Men’s Bible Study named for him at that church. He was active in participating in work to support the Malawi Mission Group at First Presbyterian for well over a decade. He also drove for Meals on Wheels and was involved with disaster planning for the state of Virginia.
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 1215 VES Road, Lynchburg with the Rev. Peter A. Thompson officiating.
