Daniel K. Hogan, Sr. 80, born in Botetourt County and lived most of his life in the Lynchburg area. Dan departed this life on April 1, 2016, with his wife by his side at his home in Forest after an extended illness with cancer.

He is an inactive member of Lakewood Baptist Church, Masons Philanthropic Lodge #168, and American Legion 16.

Mr. Hogan is survived by: his wife, Betty; sister, Estelle Holloran (Keith); special niece, Deborah Hawkins both of Lynchburg, and several nieces and nephews; three step-daughters, Patsy Gutierrez (Francisco), Gayle Hughes, and Sharon Proffitt (John).

In addition to his parents, Herman L. Hogan, Sr. and the late Vera Carroll Hogan., he was preceded in death by his son, Daniel K. Hogan, Jr.; two brothers, Herman L. Hogan, Jr., Carlton Hogan; sister, Elaine Allen; and Daisy Mae, family poodle.

A celebration of Dan’s life will be held at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg Monday, April 4, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Curtis Walkup officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to service.

We are honoring Dan’s request to be cremated. In lieu of flowers, please consider making memorial contributions to your favorite charity.

Dan retired after 31 years with the Federal Government, in 2003. He served his country in the U.S. Army 1954 to 1956 (Korea), the U.S. Air Force 1957 to 1959 and in the Air Force Reserve until 1962. He served as a Deputy Sheriff first in Campbell County and then in the City of Lynchburg. He graduated from Lynchburg College with a Bachelor of Arts in 1973, and Master of Education in 1977. Dan received many awards from all the places he worked or served that are too many to mention.

Dan enjoyed coaching the Little League team, as well as watching the Yankees, Cowboys, and NASCAR on television and going to the races.

The family would like to thank Penny, Uncle Bob and John (neighbors) for their ongoing assistance with Dan, as well as the staff at Gentle Shepherd Hospice for their dedication and compassion while working with Dan and his family.
