David A. Johnson, Lynchburg, died November 12, 2014. He was predeceased by his parents, Bethel and Catherine Johnson; a daughter, Elizabeth Johnson Boatner; and a brother, Andrew C. Johnson. His survivors include his wife, Jan; son, Kerke A. Johnson (Lynne) of Norfolk; son-in-law, Ivan Boatner of Knoxville, TN; and granddaughters, Haley, Peyton, and Margaret.
He was born September 12, 1933, in Joplin, MO and worked in his father’s manufacturing business several years after receiving a BA from the University of Tulsa, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. As he felt more at home in academic world, he finished an MS at Pittsburg State University in Kansas and a PhD from Oklahoma State University, where he was a member of Sigma Xi, a group which promotes research in science.
In 1969 he began a 27 year career as professor of psychology at Sweet Briar College. His special interests were human learning, memory and animal behavior. He made several trips to study animal behavior in research labs and zoos in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. His most favorite research was in the Galapagos Islands. He was awarded an NSF post-doctoral research placement at the University of Michigan and published articles in several journals.
An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. An accomplished marksman, he set two national records as a member of the Arizona State Team at the National Rifle Matches in 1962. As a member of the Missouri State Team in 1961, he was the highest scoring civilian shooter in the Navy Cup matches. In his later years, he enjoyed taking art classes and painting, especially with water color.
David was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry and as a lay reader and chalicist.
