We have lost a great friend and an all-around good human being. David Crowther Campbell left this life on August 15, 2016, after battling cancer for nearly two years.
Born in Lynchburg in 1938, Dave was the son of Willie Crowther and Mary Louise Ruhland Campbell. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving on the USS Richard E. Kraus during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He spent his professional career as a member of the Lynchburg Fire Department. It has been said that he was one of the best pumper engineers the city ever had.
He is survived by his wife, and truly his soul mate, Janice Hurt Campbell. High school sweethearts, they were married December 12, 1959 and she was at his side when he went home. Additionally, he leaves behind his daughter, Donna Marie Campbell Puyear and her husband, Kenneth; a granddaughter, Heather P. Petrie and her husband, Kirk; two great grandchildren: Jacob Petrie and Bridgette Danielle Petrie; one brother, Timothy Colin Campbell Sr. and his wife, Beverly Hailey Campbell; a niece, Claire Andrews Campbell; a nephew, Timothy Colin Campbell Jr. and his wife, Joanna Tochman Campbell and too many cousins and family extensions to list here.
Dave attended public schools in Lynchburg, including Fairview Elementary and E.C. Glass High where he graduated in 1958. He grew up in the family at Fairview Christian Church during the years of John L. Suttenfield and in recent years at the Timberlake Christian Church.
There are many people who were touched by Dave’s life of helping protect others and their property. He made more friends than he had years with us. He is remembered for his affection for Studebakers, community support, kindness, and sense of humor.
A celebration of life service will be held at Timberlake Christian Church on Thursday, August 18, 2016, with Rev. Robert Mooty officiating. Entombment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the church. The Lynchburg Fire Department Honor Guard will serve as pallbearers.
