David Mends

David Mends, 93, of Huddleston, died Thursday, November 15, 2012 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born April 16, 1919, in London, England, a son of the late Eva Augusta Mary Doll Mends and Aubrey George William Mends.

David served in the British Army in WWII, in the Battle of Britain, and overseas in East Arica, India and Burma. His rank on discharge was Warrant Officer, Class I, and was acting as Officer Commanding 1077 Indian Workshops.

He then obtained an Honors degree in Metallurgical Engineering at London University. He was awarded three patents, and worked in England, Canada and the United States, and has published several research papers in technical literature.

After retiring in 1984, he and his wife, Marie (nee Danner), moved to Virginia, and settled in Huddleston. He served for several years as an EMT in the Huddleston Rescue Squad, and wrote articles and letters to the Editor for many years. He was also a Director of the Big Otter Mill Foundation and a member and treasurer of the Board of Virginia Tax Payers Association.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his wife in 2005, Marie Danner Mends. He is survived by three children, Nigel Mends of Helena, MT, Deborah Vendryes of Paris, France, and Carol Halsdorf of Bristol, CT; four grandchildren, Eva Mends, Morgan Mends, Helene Vendryes, and Philipe Vendryes; a stepson, Winton C. Nickerson of Danbury, CT; and two daughters at heart, Kelly Overstreet and Diane Kelso.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Huddleston Rescue Squad, 5349 Smith Mountain Lake Parkway, Huddleston, VA 24104.

A celebration of David\"™s life will be conducted at 6 PM, Saturday, November 17, 2012 in the Tharp Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jackie Carver officiating. Arrangements by Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford, 586-3443.
