David Ray Altman passed into to heaven on July 28, 2021, with his family by his side at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was the loving husband of Anna Altman. Dave and Ann were married for 59 years and their time together will always be cherished.
In addition to his wife, Dave is survived by his daughter Vera Hollen and her husband Larry Hollen, grandson Larry Hollen, Jr. and wife Drew Hollen, granddaughter Maryann Hollen, great grandchildren Aubrey Hollen and Caden Hollen, his beloved sister Patty Reaves, and his cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Dave was born on August 18, 1940 in Johnsonville, SC to James Rion Altman and Vera Mae Altman. He served four years in the U.S. Navy followed by a career as a telecommunications officer in the Central Intelligence Agency. He and his family enjoy their many memories from living overseas in South Korea, Israel, Ethiopia, Sweden, Guyana and Saudi Arabia, plus side trip adventures to places less traveled. Dave was awarded the Career Intelligence Medal for his dedication and service.
In his personal life, Dave’s interests included amateur radio, golf, and family. He was a man of great integrity and a strong role model that will impact generations to come. He demonstrated his deep values daily in the way he interacted with others. He was always willing to help anyone in need through charitable giving and service. He was good natured, God-loving, and respectful. He put his family first above all. His greatest pride was his beloved TJ and Maryann, his grandkids that he laughed with, cheered for, and boasted about. Love will keep him in our hearts forever.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Scruggs Volunteer Fire & Rescue, PO Box 844, Hardy, VA 24101-0844 or to St. Joseph’s Indian School https://www.stjo.org/help-native-americans/memorials/, a charity that was meaningful to Dave.
The family wishes to thank all the family and friends for their support. Your love and friendship mean the world to us.
