David Henry Shearer

November 10, 1943 — November 5, 2024

David Henry Shearer, 80, of Stuart, Virginia, passed away on November 5, 2024. Born on November 10, 1943, in Hanover, Pennsylvania, David led a life rich in love, commitment, and a passion for the great outdoors.

A dedicated civil engineer by profession, David earned his degree from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He accomplished impeccable work, particularly with bridges, which he regarded with adoration and pride throughout his career at PennDOT and other notable firms. His diligence and dedication to engineering were only paralleled by his humility; he was a man who preferred to observe rather than seek the spotlight.

David’s life was marked by courage as a decorated marine who served valiantly in Vietnam, where he earned a Purple Heart for his bravery. This experience forged a character of resilience and honor that he carried with him throughout his life.

David possessed a profound love for Virginia, drawn to its majestic mountains and abundant wildlife. An avid outdoorsman, he cherished time spent hunting and fishing with his brother, reveling in the serenity that nature offered.

A man of strong faith, David was raised in Black Rock Church of the Brethren in Glenville, Pennsylvania, fostering a spiritual foundation that he carried with him to Good Shepherd Church of the Nazarene in Stuarts Draft, Virginia, in more recent years.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, David was a devoted family man. He is survived by his daughter, Laura Lutz, as well as his grandchildren, Benjamin Sterner, Andrew Lutz, and Amanda Lutz. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren; siblings, Darlene Myers, Ray Shearer (Lourdes), and Lee Shearer (Lisa). David also leaves behind his first wife, Patricia Shearer, and his beloved cat, Fuzzy Bear, who was a loyal companion. He was blessed with special friends, Mark Lynch and Kathryn Lowry, who brought joy to his daily life and became more like family.

David's memory will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilford and Luella Shearer; wife, Anna Shearer; daughter, Robin Shearer; and his brother Noah "Peanut" Shearer. His life serves as a testament to the values he cherished: dedication, family, and a deep appreciation for world around him.

A memorial service to celebrate David’s life will be held at a later date.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
