David Charles Young, of Lynchburg, Virginia passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.
He was born on February 22, 1954, in Washington, D.C. to Barbara Jeanne Young and William Lee Young.
He is survived by his brother, William Mark Young and his sister, Rebecca Lee Young. He leaves behind his companion, Karee Heighton, and is predeceased by his late wife Sherry Young and his longtime partner, Kim Harrell.
Opening the Harley Davidson Dealership on Timberlake Road is what originally brought him to this area from Northern Virginia. A subsequent career in substance abuse was the bridge before opening Stones ‘n Bones, in Forest, VA. His lifelong passion for all things in nature, along with his dedication, fine workmanship and a love of art, made the store an icon in the Lynchburg/Forest area.
We are deeply saddened and heartbroken. During the nearly 30 years of operation in Lynchburg and Forest, Dave became an icon in the “buy local” scene. He was a paragon of curiosity, especially regarding the natural sciences. And he certainly never met a stranger! If it was a young person, he encouraged them to read… and do math, and art, and history, and of course science, and to follow their dreams. If you were just passing through town, he reminisced about the time he'd spent rockhounding in your neck of the woods. If you were new to the area, he welcomed you and gave you tips as to where the best places to find rocks and minerals are, along with information about joining the local rock club. The infamous sofa was a place where sat and chatted with friends, and customers who were actually just new friends, but didn't know it yet. He was grateful for the amazing customers who frequented the store, and often said you all were “the best customers ever!”
A Celebration of David’s Life has not yet been finalized. Once it is, we will post the date and time here and on the Stones 'n Bones FB page.
In lieu of flowers, David would encourage you to
THINK! IT'S NOT ILLEGAL YET & LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD!
David will be sorely missed.
May he rest in peace.
