Deacon Joseph C. Marotta, 39, of Lynchburg, Virginia, died suddenly on June 5, 2013.
He was born to Anthony J. and Margaret M. Marotta in New York City on April 17, 1974.
Joe grew up in Mendham, New Jersey and graduated from West Morris Mendham High School in 1992. He received a Bachelor\"™s of Business Administration in Accounting in 1996 from the College of William & Mary where he met his wife, Katie Powell Marotta. They were married on June 27, 1998. In 2012, he earned a Masters in Theology from St. Leo University.
Joe\"™s enthusiastic service to the Catholic Church began in early childhood, serving as an altar server at St. Joseph\"™s Church in Mendham, and continuing as a Eucharistic minister for the Catholic Campus Ministry at William & Mary. Joe and Katie joined the parish of Holy Cross Catholic Church in 1998, and he has served the parish in a variety of positions over the past 15 years. He has been the Coordinator for Christian Initiation, facilitating the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) ministry since September 2000. In this role, he introduced hundreds to the Catholic faith. In October 2012, Joe was ordained as a Permanent Deacon by the Richmond Diocese and served the Holy Cross community as a Deacon since that time.
A CPA, Joe was the Controller at Randolph College and previously served as the Chief Financial Officer at VALTIM, Inc. for 8 years. He began his career at KPMG in New Jersey.
Joe was a loving and devoted husband and father to his five children: Christopher, 11; Caroline, Jack, and Michael, 9; and William, 9 months. Joe was deeply committed to his family and was incredibly involved in his children\"™s lives and activities. He was a voracious reader and enjoyed socializing with his many old and new friends.
Joe is survived by his wife, children, parents, grandmother, Margaret Brady, parents-in-law Dr. Kenneth and Debbie Powell, sister and brother-in-law Diane and Allen Walker, and brother-in-law, Erik Powell.
A Prayer Service and family visitation will be held on Sunday, June 9th from 7 to 8:30 PM at Holy Cross Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Resurrection will be held at 2PM on Monday, June 10th at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Monsignor J. Kenneth Rush officiating. Following a reception, interment will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery.
