Dennis grew up in Lynchburg, VA. He graduated from EC Glass High School where he played football and met the love of his life, Donna Oakes. He and Donna went off to Farmville, VA for college. Dennis attended Hampden-Sydney College and Donna went to Longwood University. After their freshman year, they were married December 17, 1960. While at Hampden-Sydney, Dennis played football and Donna worked in the Dean’s office. To make ends meet, they started Dills Sandwich Service. Dennis sold sandwiches and juices to the other students in the evenings after the dining facilities had closed. After his graduation from college, Dennis enlisted in the United States Navy. The former Vietnam veteran and his wife, Donna, travelled all over the world with the Navy. During this time, their daughters, Stuart and Lee, were born. After the Navy, they settled in North Carolina where Dennis embarked on a banking career with Wachovia Bank, First Bank and Suntrust Bank. His career took the family to Raleigh, NC, Winston-Salem, NC, Minneapolis, MN and Atlanta, GA. When he retired Dennis was the President and CEO of Suntrust Bank’s trust department in Atlanta, GA. He and Donna went “home” to Lynchburg, VA upon retirement. Once back in Lynchburg, Dennis could be found chasing golf balls on the course at Boonsboro Country Club just about every day. Everywhere they lived, he and Donna were very involved in the Episcopal Church. In Lynchburg, they enjoyed fellowship and worship at Trinity Episcopal Church.
Dennis and Donna developed many lifelong friendships in Raleigh, Winston-Salem, Minneapolis, and Atlanta. There are too many people to mention here but know that each and every one of you means the world to our family and we cherish all the memories.
