Dennis Scott Tolley, 73, of Lynchburg—a best friend in the truest sense to his entire family, his enormous circle of friends, past and present coworkers, and anyone whose life he touched—went to be with our Lord on Saturday, September 3, 2016. Dennis lived life his way, but did so with an incredible love for that life and love for the many people blessed to have known him. He is finally at peace in his new journey, but in his path he touched the hearts of so many who will forever be better off having known Dennis Scott Tolley.
Born October 6, 1942, he was the son of John Wyatt Tolley Jr., and Marjorie “Becky” Tolley. John Wyatt passed on October 18, 2000, and Becky passed on March 27, 2007.
It has been said that Dennis loved like Jesus did—selflessly, unconditionally, and with passion as well as compassion. That uniquely special love and legacy is forever etched in the hearts of his adoring family. He is survived by his wife, Heather Tolley; his brother Steve Tolley and wife, Penny of Big Island, Va.; his four sons, Scott Tolley and wife, Tamara of Wellington, Fla., Brian Tolley and wife, Heather of Lynchburg, Kevin Tolley of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Jeffrey Tolley of Lynchburg; and step-daughters, Tiffany Fast of Lynchburg and Kristen Fast of Munich, Germany. He has five adoring grandchildren; Tyler Robertson, Austin Tolley, Dylan Tolley, Hannah Tolley, and Hunter Tolley; as well as step-granddaughter, Kayla Fast. He is also survived by nephew Matt Tolley of Arlington, Va., and niece Amy Tolley of Marseille, France.
Befitting his ability to communicate with everyone he ever met, Dennis was a lifetime veteran of the communications business. He was a longtime employee of the Chesapeake and Potomac (C&P) Telephone Company of Virginia, and then AT&T, before partnering with two others to form his own telecommunications company, BB&T.
Dennis was a standout football player at E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg, where he graduated.
